Pattern Cloud

The concept stems from a changing play of patterns produced by sunlight during the daytime as well as kinetic light sequences at night,. Situated in the 1st floor outdoor open space at the center of the Art Jameel museum campus in Dubai, the location allows the work to serve as a kind of sundial, marking the movement of light and shadow across the space. The assembly is based on two simple flexible materials: steel tension cables, and 3mm thick polycarbonate panels folded into box volumes. The tension cables are hung from the roofs of the buildings directly adjacent to the open space. Each row of tension cables drape naturally so as to form a set of upper and lower catenary curves. Each panel contains a light frame of color-changing LED strip-lighting. The LED lights from all the panels are wired to a programmable interface that can be choreographed for limitless kinetic configuration.
